Police charge man for Waikoloa affray

A Waikoloa man is has been charged with 15 offenses in connection with an affray in Waikoloa early Monday that sent two men to the hospital, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

While 20-year-old Gary Morrison of Waikoloa was being held at the Kona police cellblock, Area II Criminal Investigations Section detectives executed a search warrant Tuesday on the car he had been driving. They recovered a loaded rifle, an unloaded rifle, ammunition and an illegal butterfly knife.

At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, detectives charged Morrison with abuse, first-degree terroristic threatening, reckless endangering, disorderly conduct, possessing an illegal butterfly knife, two counts of second-degree assault and eight firearms offenses. His bail was set at $22,750. He remained at the cellblock until his initial court appearance on Wednesday.

At 5 a.m. Monday, South Kohala patrol officers responded to a report of a possible domestic abuse incident on Makuakane Street in Waikoloa Village. While en route, police received additional reports that a man was threatening a woman with a gun, an affray was in progress involving several people and someone had been stabbed.

When officers arrived, Morrison was being detained by people at the scene, who reported he was responsible for threatening a woman with a firearm and for cutting two men with a knife. Police recovered a knife and arrested Morrison.

A 21-year-old Hawi man suffered a laceration to his arm and a 22-year-old Waikoloa man suffered a laceration to his leg. Both men were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and released.
